Winemaker

After creating seven vintages as enologist in the Real Companhia Velha, I felt the need to start an individual project where I could apply my ideas and where I could control the entire production process. Without compromises, a wine that would reflect my interpretation of the Douro.

In 2001 I bought this quinta and started the Poeira project. A little later, in 2002, I joined Quinta de La Rosa as chief enologist. With the purchase of a quinta in the upper Douro by the Bergqvist family, there emerged a new wine called Passagem, the result of a partnership with the owners.

The Sirga was also a project that began in 2004 from a belief in the vine from which it is made, but principally out of friendship with the owners.

The possibility of producing high quality white and red grapes on the same quinta demonstrates once again the Douro’s enormous diversity and how this diversity can be found even on small properties.

When we were preparing the soil for planting in 2004, we came across 1 hectare of land that had a completely different soil from the rest of the quinta - deeper, less stony, more fertile and with greater availability of water. This parcel is located in a more sheltered area, with fewer hours of exposure to the sun. It seemed clear to us that although what we had here was letter ‘A’ terroir (regarded as having first-rate potential for producing Port wine), we had an opportunity to produce excellent quality white grapes.

As with the red, we have tried to make a wine with a unique personality, with an expressive aroma and the depth and freshness that characterise all our wines.
